And there shall come ... a second edition?
As of this writing, What's so Powerful About Responsibility has been out in the world for nearly a year. In some ways, I'm still a bit proud of it. But as far as first time projects go ... well, it feels like a first-time project. The game went through a lot of revision, and some playtesting, and even though I missed the deadline for the initial jam I was writing it for (I need to stop hitting "Join" on Jams that have a week or two left ...), I felt good that I got over myself and put something out into the world. Even something as well meaning but flawed as the original game.
So, why a second edition? Why not just move on to bigger and better things? Well, I still have some love for the ideas behind the game: a superhero game that hinges on the character's relationships, that makes powers broad and simple, and is driven by having the characters do the right thing. I love the What's So Cool About mechanics, and I love working with them to create something new. However, in my amateur enthusiasm, I feel like the original WsPAR missed the mark.
Too much 'stuff' at the front end, too much trying to make square pegs fit in round holes. So, I kept poking at it, I kept turning it over and over in my head, even when I had other projects I could have been working on, and I kept trying to make this first thing 'work.' And finally, I think I'm onto something. A longer dev blog will be posted soon, to detail those changes and the intent behind them.
The purpose of this post is to announce a second edition is coming, before the end of the year. I've reworked characters, gameplay, and even the die mechanic (though What's so Cool remains the base). Before I do this, however, I would like to invite anyone who gave the game a download and a read to get in with their comments, questions, advice or concerns, or any other feedback they might want to share. The new edition will be available here, so that anyone who bought the original or claimed a community copy has access to the new edition. I hope that any disappointments with the original won't temper your enthusiasm to give the second edition a chance, and I would love any feedback that you, dear readers, might be willing to provide.
