In Going Over, you take on the role of the ultimate underdog in professional wrestling: the unsung hero of the independent circuit, fighting for a handshake and a hotdog in front of dozens (upon dozens!) fans, navigating the weird politics of the locker room and finding every opportunity you can do give yourself to the big, stupid thing you love: professional wrestling.

Each session has you journaling your character's last match, reflecting on what went right, what went wrong, and everything you're still trying to figure out. Did you make someone mad backstage? Did you screw something up so bad in front of the fans it can never be forgiven? Did you bring something completely new to the table to shock and amaze them? And most importantly, when the final bell sounds, is it your hand the referee is raising when all is said and done?

Going Over is a Second Guess game, created for the Second Guess Jam hosted by Gamenomicon, and is a loving parody/tribute to local-level independent wrestling. It is released under the Second Guess SRD, by William Lentz, with thanks and appreciation! Cover image and banner generously created and provided by Paolo Jose Cruz

Handshake and a Hotdog

There are always ways to lend a hand at a local show (and score yourself a comped ticket). Community Copies are available for anyone who can't afford the purchase price for Going Over. Additional Copies will be made available for any purchase of the game, and for any comments or ratings that help to improve Going Over! Thanks for reading!

Also! One of my favorite things about RPG's is character, and seeing what people come up with. If you'd like a copy of the game to be added to the community pool, leave a comment on the game page with a character you would want to make in that game.

I was impressed enough with the game to noodle around in Canva and make a fan cover + banner. Kinda generically indie-riffic, by design—I deliberately limited my resources to Public Domain Vectors + Canva's free-to-use in-house assets. But I'd like to believe even that fits the journeyman vibe of the gameplay.

You're most welcome to use them, if you please!

Wow! First of all, this looks fantastic, and I think it absolutely fits the intended vibe of the game. Thank you so much! If it's alright with you, I would love to use this for the game's page (possibly my Twitter banner too, if that's cool. All with full credit, of course). Design and layout is not something I'm very well versed in, but I love seeing what people can do with the tools that are out there. Again, thank you for doing this, and posting here. They look great, and again, it fits the tone of the game I had in mind perfectly!

Also, thanks for the heads up about the One Page Game Jam. Was thinking about the theme of Going Over, and the 'border' element would probably be in the separation between in-ring and backstage events, and how they affect one another. Appreciate you letting me know about that!

I might post again when I've done an actual playthrough. For now, my first impressions:

  • So far, they only solo pro wrestling TRPG I've encountered. That already makes it stand out.
  • The first pro wrestling TRPG I've seen that puts the focus squarely on 'shoot'/out-of-ring goals and actions, i.e. my player character is the wrestler/performer, not (necessarily) their gimmick persona... which makes perfect sense for a Second Guess game.
  • It seems to lack a recognizable end state.
    • That is, spell it out: "At 6 Going Over points, you've won a crowd following and/or the respect of your peers and/or a backstage reputation as a solid worker".
    • Conversely, what are the implications of reaching 6 Going Home points, beyond the obvious?
  • The wording assumes the player is a smark, or at least somewhat familiar with basic concepts (chain wrestling, "big moves"), and terminology (gimmick, heel, booker). That's fine if you know who you're writing for. However, even with a $1 price tag, there's a chance this might attract players who are into solo journaling games, but not necessarily indie wrestling.

On a more personal note, I live in a city (Metro Manila, Philippines) where there are still major restrictions on live sports (entertainment) events.  So this seems like *exactly* the kind of vicarious distraction I appreciate right now.

Hey there! Thanks for checking out Going Over, and giving your thoughts! Really appreciate it. Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated, and will be considered for any revisions that need to be made.

Doing a one-pager was an experiment for me, because I tend to be long-winded. Wanted to address the Getting Over and Going Home points. A match is meant to end when you get a Going Home point, and roll 1d6. If you roll under your current Going Home points, the match continues. If you roll that number or higher, you go into the finish. Roll 1d6 again, and if you roll above your Getting Over points, then you're booked to win. Either way, journal the finish of the match, how you figure the crowd would react, and what your character's thoughts and feelings on the finish would be. From there, you could start another match with that character, or try something else. I could revise this to make it more clear, in the text.

I did write this with an intent to firmly entrench it within almost obnoxious smarkiness. Perhaps a revision could include a glossary, or I could give some definitions here in the store page description. Thank you for pointing that out, I could stand to make the game more accessible to those outside that audience.

I am there with you on needing a distraction, right now. The small indie I've recently joined up with is just starting to put on live shows again (socially distanced, screened, and all), but I don't know how much longer that'll be the case with COVID numbers rising again. For now, glad that this could provide a distraction for you, hope it was enjoyable, and thank you so much for the support!

Oh, I forgot to mention... Since you clearly put a lot of effort into the pacing, might as well submit this for the One-Page RPG Jam too. It definitely qualifies, being published squarely within the Jam period.
